A wide front is more stable in combination with the righting moment of the rear wheels. Think of it this way, if the front pivot was all the way up to the CG height of the engine, then even as the tractor started to lean, the weight would stay centered in front. The rear tires would only have to right the rear. With the tricycle, a little lean produces an offset between the engine CG and the "pivot" which is the ground. The rear tires now have to fight this imbalance as well. Both will fall over if you take the rear wheels out of the picture, it is a matter of the imbalance generated at a given angle, and how fast it increases.
