Rcubed: My dad's 1957 six cylinder Chevy sedan gave 26 mpg. I'm talking Imperial gallon. Today my Buick LeSabre 6 cylinder gives me 26 mpg. To me 48 years and no change. Your US gallon being 80% in size of Imperial gallon, 20 mpg US would be close.

My brother tried one of those little imports, and he said, yes you can get 35 mpg if you spend $100. per month keeping it tuned up.
