That's usually what happens. That serial number puts it as a way late '75 or very early '76. I think those lines got a little blurry and weren't "exactly" a line drawn in the sand.

One time I bought a chopper that I know darned well had set on the dealer's lot for at least 5 years.

Was in a big toot to get the crop put up and needed it in a hurry. Dealer naturally went by the latest and updated sales price, of course.
