The later 686s did have the 310 German diesel, early models had the D-312(I have a few around here with either engine). As far as IH tractors with 6 Cyl. German diesels, you could find them in later 706s(D-310), 756(D-310), 826(D-358), later 686s(D-310), later 886s(D-358), all 786s(D-358), later Hydro 86s(D-310), 30 & 3288s(D-358s). Most of the 74 Series, 84 Series, 85 Series(Case-IH), 95 Series(Case-IH), 3200/4200 Series(Case-IH) that had diesels used a 3 or 4 cyl. version of the German Diesel engine.
