Depends upon the color of the smoke, oil or maybe fuel. I have a JD 430 that has some hours on it and it always puffs smoke when it starts, think it is valve guides but power is good, it never smokes any other time, it sometimes takes a quart of oil between changes. Hardly seems like a big problem as most newer tractors will take more than that.
