Yeah, I've done both too. Filing points is fine too. Crocus cloth is a very fine abrasive - like a fine sandpaper - but I believe the abrasive is made out of clay or some type of ceramic. Usually a good hardware store will know what you're talking about if you ask for it and the product should be labeled 'crocus cloth'. If you've big buildups on your points, take them down with a file but finish with the crocus cloth (and contact cleaner, if you've got it). That'll leave the surface of the points about as clean as you can get them.
