Super MTA: Broken Throttle Spring

I've got a broken throttle spring down in the governor box. The broken spring disabled the throttle entirely. I found one at a hardware store that will work but, I don't think it is the same type of metal. The broken spring looks like tempered steel, not sure. It is continually sloshed w/oil. Does anyone know if I should be replacing the spring w/a tempered steel spring or will the cheap silver spring from the hardware store work?
