Innkeeper, 8 volt batteries are common and were often put in 6 volt systems. They give you better starting, spin the starter quicker and they fit where a 6 volt battery would. The generator will charge an 8 volt battery as they usually put out well over 6 volts. A collector friend of mine has over 40 tractors and most of them have their batteries replaced by 8 volt batteries. I wouldn't hesitate to replace it with another. I would say congratulations, I think you got a good buy @$450 on the M..............Mike in Exeter Ontario
