Migraine, I would guess that they were trying to lock it out, as the control valve is known to stick. About two years ago, the control valve stuck on our 966, not enough to totally lock the diff, but enough to make some bad noises. Sounded like bearings going out. Our local Case-IH dealer's tractor guy looked right at it and knew exactly what the promblem was, got it unstuck, and was going to remove the pedal, but that got forgotten amongst fixing the damage of the cab fire they started doing some work behind the dash, long story, don't get me started. If I was you, I wouldn't even mess around trying to get that diff lock working. They don't hold on a hard pull. You'll see why if you remove the disks. Definetly one area where Deere had IH beat.
