we just had this problem on dads H after forty some yrs the gears had the meshing surface
corners chipped off changed those gears and most of the bearings do to age and convienence as open. If you do take apart DO NOT getthe reverse idler gear down in the bottom end for end as this will cause this howl and will not go into 2nd gear.The idler gear will look identical on both ends and same # of teeth.
