Sounds like weak ignition problem to me. The coil "gets really hot" is the key - it should become only slightly warm after extended operation. An overheated coil may still throw a weak spark - enough spark to ignite ether but insufficient to fire gasoline. I'll bet the 154 is 12 volt, has a 6 volt coil installed and has no ignition ballast resistor. This will cause the coil to overheat, and overheating reduces output voltage and will ultimately destroy the coil. If this is the case I would replace the coil with a "12 volt" coil. And while at it install a fresh set of points (likely the existing points are burned). Hope this helps!
