The condensor is inside the distributor cap, and your engine won't run without it. Are you maybe thinking of a BALLAST RESISTOR in between the battery wire and the coil? The only reason for a ballast resistor is if you use a 6V coil in a 12V system. Since a 454 should've had a 12V battery and a 12V coil right from the get-go, it makes no sense why the mechanic would do that. You were probably getting a weak spark due to the resistor reducing the voltage to the coil. That caused incomplete fuel burn and probably fouled the plugs. With today's junk gasoline, you may get fouled plugs from time to time. When it happens, have a fresh set handy is all.
