What you are describing probably is an indicator that the TA needs adjusting. See the owner’s manual or a shop manual for your model and carefully adjust it to spec. Then you should be able to shift gears easily when you are standing still. What happens is that the clutch on the planetary doesn’t completely disengage and the sprag part of the TA won’t allow the input shaft to the transmission to rotate and relieve the pressure on the gears to allow them to slide on the pinion shaft easily. The other thing that I have experienced when the TA is adjusted correctly and this symptom persists is that the clutch is actually “hanging up” on the flywheel or pressure plate. I have noticed this when a metallic “dyna-life” button style clutch has been installed. These clutches are made of harder material and wear the flywheel and pressure plate in a curved pattern on the inside and outside diameters of the buttons. This creates enough friction to make it hard to shift unless you are moving slightly in the direction of the gear you are in. To cure this you need to reface the flywheel and replace the clutch and pressure plate. The old full-faced fiber clutches might slip easier under a load, but rarely caused this symptom. Just some thoughts…

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
