There is nothing un-common or unusual about the single front wheel, it was an option, just the same as the two wheel narrow front, or even the wide front. All of these were options, and depending on what part of the country you are in, one is as common as the other. As far as your ignition system- the tractor would originally been equipped with a magneto, most of those tractors were converted to a distributor because of the greater ease of maintenance. What you are describing sounds to me like a distributor.
