Rich, I think you misunderstood the years of 706 diesels. 706s were built from 1963-1967 & diesels were available all these years. However, 2 different engines were used. When the 706 came out in '63, the diesel was a D-282, which was the same engine as a 560, just speeded up for more HP. This engine had glow plugs, precombustion chambers, etc. Then in late 65-early 66 the diesel was changed to a D-310 German Diesel, which was a direct-injected engine & was used till the end of 706 production(was also used in the 756, which replaced the 706). The glow plug engine had a reputation for being a hard starter, & usually this was caused by ignorance/poor maitenance. With good glow plugs & batteries, 10W engine oil, block heater, & #1 diesel, they will start at 20-30 below zero with no problems. Our 706 out at the farm will outstart our M, but that's not a fair comparison since the ol' M is pretty tired anymore.
