William: As Captain said if you change to detergent oil be ready to deal with the dirt you loosen up. I once did this with an engine I knew was dirty. In 4 days I changed the oil or I should say attempted. Removed the plug and nothing came out. Stuck my finger in the drain hole, and it felt like board. I removed the pan to find about 1" of sludge across bottom of pan. I cleaned the pan, changed the filter, put in new 15W-40 detergent oil. That was close to 20 years ago, and as of 4 years ago tractor was still going without a rebuild. The owner didn't use it a lot but when he did he worked it hard. I personally think detergent oil is the best way to go. I've been using detergent oil now close to 35 years. I used to use 20 in winter and 30 in summer, now I use 15W-40 all the time.
