I can't imagine this being a carbuerator problem, since it is an updraft, and there's no way gas can leak from the carb to the crankcase. From the discription of the smoke, sounds like you've got blow by from bad rings. The gas could be seeping past the rings on compression stroke, contaminating the oil. Leave the carb alone. But it is always a good idea to turn the fuel off at the tank after use. Those floats are notorious for getting stuck.
