You don't need to split the tractor - you do need to drop the Liftall unit and take the deck off the transmission/rear end. The IH Blue Ribbon Service Manual is invaluable. When I did mine I went ahead and ordered both the gear and the shaft with which it couples. Don't. it seems the splines in the female end (the gear) were worn to nubs but the splines on the male side were in good shape. They're supposed to be rounded on the end. Wm
