what we have found is the 407 uses a little more than the DT414 in most cases. both are fairly durable but the 407 will almost always out last the 414. make sure the 414 has a water filter and it should look as though it has been changed not too long ago. we generally change the water filter every 200 hours and do a water sample every 100 and it stays in spec. if they get out of spec the sleeves start to pit and once they start it is only a matter of time. the only weak points i know of on the 407 are the fact that don't don't start good in cold weather and they are prone to break a push rod every now and then. other than that i can't think of a thing, our 1456 has around 13,000 hours on it and aside from some head work it has never been tore down. and it pulled at 4500 rpm for a couple of summers.
