The early ones had fewer casting dates, but check the right side of the block about in the middle. If the engine hasn't been changed out, the ser. number for the engine is stamped above number one spark plug on a milled flat boss. The serial numbers matched on the early ones, or were very close, so you should be able to determine the year, but it sounds like you have a 39 to 41
