In reality the only time a generator needs to be polarized is after it's been disassembled and rebuilt, after it's replaced with a different generator, or after the tractor has been struck by lightning (don't ask how I know...) However since polarizing only takes a few seconds and is easy to do, it doesn't hurt to repolarize after disconnecting/reconnecting the battery.

Having a working ammeter on the tractor - and paying attention to it - is the best way to determine whether the battery is being charged when the tractor is running.

If your battery must be continually recharged in order to start your tractor, either your tractor's charging system is NOT working or the battery is on it's last legs.
