Like others have said there where many converted in southern cotton country during fiftys and early sixtys, fuel was so cheap at one time that it was almost free. Have known it to be as low as 5 cents gallon in large quanitys and as a bonus engines would last much longer than gasoline engines. In early sixtys diesel became fuel of choice and by 1970 working LP tractors were rare on full time farms in my area. About 5 years ago I was in Belzoni MS the cat fish capital of the world (at least thats what the sign said) and counted 25 LP Ms and SMs pulling portable areators in cat fish ponds on one farm. Couple of years ago was back by the same farm and all but 2 of the Ms had been replace by small diesel tractors and yard around shop was full of remains of cannibalized Ms.
