Wow, Lou sounds like you had some junk in there alright. As I understand it, the metering hole has to be open and clear or oil won't pass through the filter. On the H and A, and perhaps all letter series IH tractors, the oil filter system is a by-pass system. So a plugged filter won't stop oil from getting to other engine parts. Nevertheless, you might want to make sure you don't have a lot of trash in your engine. Maybe some frequent oil changes and cleaning out places you can reach eaisly will be needed. Some people have suggested that a sudden switch from non-detergent to detergent oil can cause a sudden loosening of crud that may plug oil passages. There is a lot on this topic in the archives. In the meanwhile, there is no down side to keeping your metering hole clean.
