Also look to see if the gasket on the cover was sealing properly. Any leak and the pump will pull in air.

Filter change and new gasket should correct.

If youdon't know the history of the tractor a hytran change might also be a good idea. I think it's 18 gallons or so. I'd also use hytran if you think their is water in it as it has better water retension and anti-rust properties that the others. A second choice would be JD's hygard. I'd stick away from the others. Hytran is a special blend designed by IH for their Hydro tractors. They made it so good that they use it in all their products.
