I also got 400,000 miles out of one of those mickey mouse 6.2 Chevy diesels.

I would stay with the top of line diesel motor oils. You just don't need to pay that much for it. I'm buying mine for about $2.50 CAD per litre, a shade more than your quart. Remember the $2.50 CAD will equal about $2.00 USD. Best maintainence I know of. Sure you can use cheaper oil, but what are the costs of engine rebuilds.
