You had 'er right to the gate, then stopped.

Those old diesels are a stinker to pull start because they need the pre-heat. Since this one hasn't run in a while, you are more than likely fighting both a cold cylinder situation and also air in the system.

Pull 'er again and this time keep a pullin' until she can run on her own so that she can purge the air in the system. If you see white smoke, that means you are getting fuel, so keep pullin'. She'll run.
