Well, for starters it would depend on what brand/style of dehorner you have. I've used a handheld electric with exceptional success. I've found it best to burn them when the horn is between 1/4" and 1/2" raised. Center the burner on the horn and hold tight for 15-20 seconds. Now this time all depends on your burner, how hot it is, how many you've already done. What you want to see after you take it off is a nice copper colored ring around the base of the horn. And yes, if it's not copper colored, do it again for a bit longer. Unless it's black. Black = Too well done!! Just send me an email if you have more questions. I'm out of the industry now, but used to do 20-30 calves a month that way.
