Casey is probably right, but before you do the big nasty, I would go to your local GM parts house and buy some "Top Engine Cleaner" (about $8 for a 12 oz. can), pull the plugs, pour evenly into each cylinder and let soak for two or three days. Then turn engine over with the plugs still removed to blow out any excess (don't want any bent rods!), replace the plugs, start engine and run it hard under a load. It will smoke like hades for at least a short time. If you don't use the beast too often, sometimes you get a carbon/crud build-up on the rings/cylinder walls that freezes the rings up and keeps them from doing their job. Worked like a champ on my blue diesel tractor, and a heckuva lot cheaper than an overhaul. Good luck!
