The rebuilt starter drive I installed on my 300U a couple months back, acted up today.I could not get the drive to engage. No grinding or anything just a free spinning starter.Removed the starter and checked the drive. It looked just fine, however the drive pinion gear was not free.It was tight.I finally figured it screwed itself backwards too far and jammed the "threads".I took a screwdriver and tapped teeth in the opposite rotation and it freed.Seems the drive travelled back too far.I greased the bejesus out of everything and it seemed smoother.Yet once I started the engine and shut it down,it now spins free 1/2 the time.I think the noise I am hearing after the engine starts (Clunk)is the drive being kicked in the reverse direction very hard and its jamming at the end of the "rifling" that kicks the drive in and out.Anyone else have this happen? The drive is complete, nothing is missing, and the felt behind the pinion gear is intact.
