Super 6 starter

I had trouble starting my Super W-6 it was not turning over very well. I thought the battery was bad but I realized that the cables were poor bad connectors and old small guage wire. After installing new cables I tried to start it and it only turned over alittle then it will not move. The battery is up to full charge. I must add that originally I tried to jump start it with my 6 volt H tractor and the starter switch is discolored from heat while jumping. Did I hurt the starter or is it possible that just the starter switch mounted directly to the starter is bad. Is there any way of checking the starter before sending it out or buying a new one? I don't have any other 3 bolt starters I can swap.
