What you are describing could be two separate issues. The starter could be a bad switch on the starter and the dying could be from a coil or condenser that is going bad. The first thing I’d do is replace the condenser and take a look at the starting switch. A lot of times the contacts in the switch get pitted or “burned” and won’t make good contact. Now, come to thing about it when you say “push button” could this have a solenoid in the starting circuit? If so that could be going bad and not powering the starter properly. I have also tested starters by hooking up jumper cables directly to the starter from a 12-volt system. If the starter rolls good then, likely it is in the wiring (including switch or solenoid) between the battery and the starter.
