Electrical problems

My '46 A has a charging problem I can't figure out. I need a new regulator. Old one is gone. How do I test my generator for shorts and proper operation? Also I went to get a new regulator from NAPA. They have two types of positive ground 6 volt regulators. Internally ground field, and externally ground field. Apparently, there is a difference in the generators. I bought the one that looks like the mount is right, it mounts on the generator. But, There are four terminals. BAT, FLD, one unmarked (ARM, I assume), and one labeled L. What is this for? Is this the right one? This is an externally grounded regulator. Any help is, as always, appreciated.
