Kevin - Pull the wires from all your spark plugs. Pull the spark plug from #1 cylinder. Slowly crank the engine till the pistion is on its way up in its compression stroke. Insert a 1/8" dowel long enough to reach the piston and extend well outside the hole. Set your mag handle (casting on the end of the mag) all the way up (off) then down about 1/4 or 3/8". Should be full retard. Slowly crank the engine, watching the dowel dowel for its indicator that you've reached TDC. Mag should impluse at the very top of the stroke or slightly past. Impulse tripping before TDC at this setting will create your kick-back. Good luck !
