Thanks for all the advice. I just ordered an Hitachi 14231 alternator and intend to replace the generator with that. Would like to go with electronic ignition, but it's not in the budget right now.
The only question left to answer is how the alternator connections on the Hitachi compare to the connections on a Delco 10-SI. Bob Melville has an good article on ytmag with directions for converting using the Delco. The Delco has connections marked Bat, 1 & 2. The Hitachi has connections marked Bat, S & L. If anyone knows which connections correspond (1 & 2 -vs- S & L) or where to find the info, would appreciate it.
