Was the oil filter cannister full of oil? Short running periods on the engine will make the oil turn dark. Those engines do not have full flow filters like the filters on your car or truck. Hal PS: I usually change my tractor's oil every spring. I don't use it for mowing anymore and its a good way to get some excercise using the hand mowers. I only use the tractor for plowing the garden and for plowing snow. When I mowed I changed the oil more often. Still going strong after 34 years.
