I have one that started life being all red, then was purchased by a county roads dept. and was painted highway orange right over the top of the red. Now that doesn't sound too bad except for a year or so later all of the county equipment had to be changed over to construction yellow and, you guessed it, was painted yellow right over the top of the orange. It gets worse, the county owned this M for about 20 years, and it recieved a fresh coat of yellow every year. All without the benefit of sanding or any other prep work. I would imagine that the M you found has had a similar life, except it was repainted red at some stage of its life.
