Saw your post about the noisy 966 transmission. I can't answer your questions, but I will join in with more noise.

The 1066 I made made from two tractors is noisy. First gear makes a clunking noise in hi, lo, and reverse. I just stay outa first gear.

The one I have to listen to is hi 4th. Like you described, mine raises cane under load but is quiet when I'm heading down grade.

I'm not running mine very much these days, or I'd have someone with more sence than I have tear in to it.

Is this noisey one of yours the one with the pretty paint job?
