The step-down resistor protects your ignition points from premature wear. 12+ volts to the points will have you changing them quite oftem due to rapid contact erosion. My son"s M with 12 volts & step-down resistor is still on it"s 1st set of points after the conversion. Why do you think GM, Ford, Chrysler, etc. all used a resistor on their 12 volt point- condenser ignition systems?? To prolong the life of the points is why. They had a resistor by-pass designed in the starter solenoid or starter switch so full battery voltage would be available for starting. Since the starter draw left only 10.5 or less volts for ignition purposes, the points never saw a full 12+ volts.
