Condensation in gas tank

I just got to wondering if it would help prevent condensation in a gas tank to leave the gas cap completely off so that the air within the tank could circulate. I know the best way is to keep the tank topped off with fuel, but then there's the potential for the gas to go bad while it's sitting over the winter. What's the thing to do here? Thanks.
