The Stage 2 has live hydraulics and the battery under the seat, same as the Stage 2 Super M. Other than disk brakes and the Super H decal, the Stage 1 had little to visually distinguish it from the H, although there were some minor differences. Both the Stage 1 and 2 had about 6 more HP than the H and speeds in 3rd and 4th gears were significantly faster. There were about twice as many Stage 1's built as 2's, production of both was a little less than 30000. To a collector, the Stage 2 is more "desireable". In terms of usefulness the live hydraulics give it an edge. Otherwise there is little difference between them. You are correct about the price, I paid $2250 for my Stage 2, somewhat more than I wanted to, a Stage 1 in the same condition would have brought $1200-1500.
