I would suspect the cam gear. It might be loose on the cam. If the key is worn it might let the gear turn on the shaft a little each revolution, but the engine would still run until it lets go completely. You might take the cap off the mag and check it while your turning the engine over. If its doing the same thing, better check the cam gear. (As a afterthought, could be the crank gear also.)
