When I put power steering on my SMTA i had a sliding connection between the PS motor and the steering shaft. This lasted about two years and wore to the point that I lost steering control. Lukily I was in the hayfield and not on the road. The purpose of the sliding connection was for use with a loader so the trator could flex and the steering shaft wouldn't be rigid. After losing steering I welded the sliding shaft and now my shaft is solid. it has been this way for over two years and it has not caused any problems. As long as the motor output is in align with the steering gear I don't see any reason not to have it solid.
