However if it has a generator grounding could be either positive or negative, depending on the whim of the person doing the conversion.

To verify polarity with a generator only (don't do this with an alternator!), hook up a battery with the positive post to the grounded cable. Then turn on the lights or the ignition switch (don't start the engine) and observe the ammeter. If it indicates DISCHARGE, the tractor is wired for POSITIVE ground - leave the battery connected as is. But if the ammeter indicates charge it's wired for negative ground - reverse the battery cables.

Once that's done, good idea to polarize the generator before the first start (momentarily connect the BAT and ARM terminals at the generator).

The distributor will work fine without the breaker cover piece and felt washer inside the distributor. It's only function is to keep dust, etc from getting into the breaker and centrifugal advance mechanism. So unless you work the tractor in dusty or wet conditions you can get by without 'em.
