The lower hose comes from the radiator, not the pump. It is a suction hose from the rad. It should be very warm (but below thermostat temp). If you disconnect the hoses from the engine (when cool) and plug the top radiator hose (a jelly lid or such clamped into the hose), while leaving the bottom open to the ground (or a big pan if you are inside), you can tell if the core is plugged as follows: Time how long it takes to fill a five gallon bucket using your garden hose. If it takes two minutes or less there is enough flow to check the radiator. If longer, you will need to use a bucket into an open funnel to get enough volume. If the radiator can take all of the hose flow without backing up, it should be ok. if not, it is clogged. (I have seen a water pump that spun the impeller on the shaft, but only one!) Another way to test is to install another radiator our of some other vehicle (it is ugly, but you do not have to go any where) and see if it solves the problem. Good luck, Jim Nicholson
