Ron: The tractors do have some similar features, however 340 used C-135 gas engine while 504 used C-153. 504D was a 188 ci in engine, 340D was smaller. Front end was quite close. TA and transmission probably the same. On Farmall 340 you straddled transmission in seat much like utilities, while 504 had flat platform above transmission. Early 504 had same PTO as 340 but I think that did change before end of production. On hitches 340 used external cylinders much the same as older 300 and 350, while 504 had completely enclosed hitch lift, much like newer tractors have. You could get 3 point or fast hitch on either.
