Changed mine over to 12 volt using the Hitachi 14231 instead of trying the Delco 10SI route. The Hitachi is about an inch smaller in diameter and you will need every bit of space you can save. Also, I found by turning over the original generator mounting bracket it moved the alternator about a good inch upward where you have plenty of extra space. I was also able to use the existing generator belt. That was a big plus as I didn't have to play around with the tractor's belts and split pulleys. Put a split lockwasher in between the pulley halves on the alternator to accomodate the wider IH generator belt. Mine works fine and starts charging at idle but this is a three wire alternator and not the single wire you asked about. I was able to use the existing wire bundle and just added the ballast resistor and a new wire from it to the distributor. I would be more then happy to share any of the deeper details if you decide to go this Hitachi route. Just send me a note through my open email. Hal
