The manual says this: Close the fuel valve at the starting tank, then close the diesel throttle while simultaneously moving the decompression lever to the starting position, then letting the engine run on the gas left in the carb until it runs out and quits. Then as soon as the crankshaft stops turning immediately move the starting lever back to the diesel position and leave it there. (This is supposed to provide more even cooling of the starting valves and help keep 'em from warping.) However as a practical matter if you are planning to run the engine again soon (like from a few minutes to a few days...) you can simply close the diesel throttle to shut it down. But if it's gonna sit longer running the carb dry before shutting down is a good idea - especially with the crappy gasoline we have today. Of course letting the engine idle on diesel for several minutes to cool the head before shutting down is required no matter what!!
