Hi Chris, I believe the 544 has a German D239 the same as 674 and 684. My brother has a 684 and when he uses it on a wood splitter where it is basically running at a fast idle, to prevent the slobbering, he does not put the STOP/RUN control lever all the way to the maximum RUN position. On a Bosch fuel injection pump the amount of fuel injected is controlled by the limit of the STOP/RUN adjustment. So by not putting the STOP/RUN to the maximum RUN position the injection pump is pumping less fuel into to each cylinder so it will burn clean and not slobber. It doesn't take much just 1/4" less than maximum. Give it a try. JB2
