I wanted something to run off my belt pulley on my IH tractors. For a lot of reasons, an IH feed grinder was the best choice but mostly because I could use it. So I placed an ad and a fella sent me pics of his grinder and it was nice but not great and the price was OK but not great but I decided to buy it anyhow. So I told him I would come down and get it in six weeks when I would be in a nearby town on business. He sent me back an email saying he had an IH collector who wanted it and he would want the full price via certified check to hold it. He said he would give me a refund if I did not want it after seeing it. I told him that, under those terms, he did not need a deposit. It made no sense if I wasn't obligated to buy it anyway and the IH collector who wanted it today would still want it in six weeks anyway. His excuse was that he needed the up front cash to restore a tractor he was working on. That told me he wouldn't have the money to refund if I turned down the grinder. So the deal went south and I have no grinder. Pardon the long post but this character kinda set me off. With all the scams floating around, I didn't think the request was reasonable. Would anyone have done this differently?
