300U T/A dire warning

Was at a show a couple of weeks back. Gent there had a 300U just like mine, but lots nicer :-) Anyways, one of his "tips" was "If the TA lever doesn"t move back at least a quarter inch when you press the clutch, you gotta adjust her, or you risk spilling TA guts all over the case when you pull the TA." Something about the bearings in the TA being held in by the tension, etc. I stepped on the clutch on mine and find that the lever probably *could* move, if it was under full spring tension. But what"s this all about anyway? Is there some magic adjustment sequence that tells you you"ve got it right?
